Our Raw Food Family Adventure
Becoming a raw food family starts with modeling and ends with choice. We can't just expect our children to play along just because we, their parents, change our minds or decide to do something different.
It is excitement, positive modeling and information that may inspire them to join us on our path. As hard as this may sound, our children came for their experience. They choose us in order to share a part of their life in partnership not to be molded, changed or forced. Our children will watch our behavior more than listen to our words. They will support us when we show them what support looks like! Speak to them from a place of peace and love and they WILL understand!
The Influences In Our World
We are a part of strong cooked, processed, unconscious thinking. Within this thought process people believe the cooked, denatured foods most cheaply, readily available are nourishing for our bodies or possibly most people just don't care.
Unless we can consciously detached our self from this processed think tank, we unconsciously fall into the desire for unhealthy foods. Even as a raw foodist at times I still feel a strong desire for complex dehydrated foods. Those foods satisfy the strong pull for the processed fare I ate for almost 30 years. I notice this happens when I am unconsciously living.
The only way to change the thinking in our planet is to think consciously and inspire others to think consciously. It is exciting to be apart of the conscious thinking of fresh foods. Be aware of the influences of the world around you, the world in which we chose to be in. Inspiring a raw food family is a possibility with strong conscious connection from all parties involved. Although not all members of the family may choose to be apart of the raw food family model. Part of being a raw food family is respecting those around us. Create a space where all are welcome without judgment.
We, The Parents, Are The Model
I recently had a conversation with 2 dear friends of mine,
Alison and Jaye.
We were discussing the behavior of parents and the fear behind doing the right or wrong thing to their kids. We observed that people will change their diets, their minds in order to be healthy. Yet when it comes to their child's diet they are stuck and scared of what to do.
Understand it is not in what you do TO them but what you SHOW by example. Children are not here to listen to you. They learn by what they see in your behavior towards them, your self, and those around you. Think back to the images in your childhood. Do you remember the telling or the doing of your parents? Children are kind, patient, loving, and intelligent. It is only from the environment around them that changes their natural spirit behavior. Take heart lovely parents, nothing is neither good or bad, we can always start from a place of where we are at this moment and grow from here.
Raw Food Family Atmosphere: Inspire Not Require
When I found out about the raw food diet and raising raw children, I was excited about the possibilities. As I read the information I thought to myself "Well of course eating fresh foods is healthy, you already knew this." So I decided to change our families diet and . . . . At the time we had 4 wonderful beings, 3 of which I had already feed them cooked, processed foods all their 12, 10 and 6 year lives. I told them of my plan and they (although a bit reluctant) agreed it sounds good. Keep in mind these wonderful children were use to a mother who was very different from most. I am always coming up with different ideas and things to try. The more excited I get the more they just want to come along from all the excitement. Now being so great with food I thought making raw foods would be just as easy and the palates would all be satisfied. NOT! Our first month on raw foods was let's say less than to be desired. The food was not that tasty and we all started right back on the cooked vegan bandwagon. I could not get the idea of be coming a raw food family out of my thoughts. I know when something is in my highest good; I get the best feeling inside my heart. I knew raw foods were the best for my and our family’s bodies. I had work to do. Raw book after book I read (not that many back then) was helping little by little understand more of the information and inspiration I desired to inspire our whole family.
Our family
homeschools/unschools/life learns,
this gives us the opportunity to stay close and connect. I asked Victoria Boutenko what she did to inspire her raw children to eat only living foods. She told me with bits of information and her example. Years later, I have listened to Valya Boutenko speak about her first year into raw foods. She said it was the excitement of health between her brother, mother and father that inspired her to eat 100% raw food diet. The more I was excited about the changes going on within my body the more my children and husband wanted on board. After a couple of years of incorporating delicious raw food dishes (I finally perfected) and inspiring information all 3 of my older children decided to be raw children and change our household diet.

Blake and Darlene 2004
- Darlene: it took a bit of practice to remain raw. I was able to stick to raw by doing it one day at a time. I feel more vibrant as the years pass.
The raw food family experience is one I treasure. I grew over the 4 years our family was raw. I was able to let go of my expectations, my attachments to what my children should or should not do or be. Parenting from a place of unconditional love gives us the opportunity to accept and trust. Our children know what is best for them. They are on a path all their own. Their experience is short, create a partnership with them and your relationship with them will remain strong.
