I have recently been contemplating certain aspects of a raw vegan lifestyle and why I have enjoyed and been thriving on plant power for over 16 years now. Than by pure perfection I receive this beautiful question from a friend at Raw Food Diet Inspiration.com asking how they could more support others as well to eat more fresh foods:
"Do you have any specific advice to say to a 14 year
old daughter? As she is still under my influence, and I would like to
influence her to eat raw also. She is somewhat receptive, is eating
more vegetables, and even a little bit of salad, which she used to
hate. She sometimes has a smoothie for breakfast, made with frozen
mangoes and strawberries. But she loves her meat, and can get grumpy if
deprived of her favorites. Probably her biggest concern right now is
her skin--she has a bit of acne which she would love to have cleared
up!"
It is amazing to me that after hearing over and over again "you are what you eat" so many don't see how what they are eating and of course thinking/feeling has so much to do with many emotional issues as well. Child crave sugar because they need glucose to power their body and brain. Without sufficient ripe, raw fruits around, they will reach for the next best thing and often times that will be processed sugars like cakes and candy or high fatty foods which will also turn to sugar (as does everything we eat) and the fat will most generally get stored. Than parents wonder why their children are carrying around more fat mass and emotions.
The other day I was counseling a young 17 year old dancer who had acne and a little weight she wanted to release from her tall figure. After getting to know her and her family history she told me her parents were both obese and had both undergone gastric bypass surgery's. Her mother who was once very over weight was now 112 pounds and was very careful about what she and her family ate now. However, what struck me as odd was that she said her mother would rarely purchase bananas saying they were not good to eat. I told her that yes most people eat bananas when they are not ripe so YES they can be hard for your body to digest but if you eat them when they are ripe and spotty they are very great for your body and a great source of sugar to support your athletic body.
After only one day of eating a plant based diet full of fruits, vegetables, beans and grains she began to feel great. I will be curious to see if she continues on her path how she will easily clear her skin and shed those extra pounds in time for her up coming dance competition.
My average day of eating and living was: Breakfast- Oatmeal or
cream of wheat with non vanilla rice milk, Lunch- bowl of no-oil, low
sodium vegan chili with various beans and cooked vegetables with 2
slices of sprouted whole wheat bread with apple "butter" spread,
Dinner- rice or whole wheat
pasta with no-oil, low sodium tomato sauce and 2-4 slices of sprouts
whole wheat bread with rice syrup or jam. If I thought about it I may
have carrots slices or cooked broccoli or maybe a piece of fruit. It
was close to a version of this every day.
I did not
know about gluten intolerance or how hard it is on a typical digestive
system to digest grains I still ate them and my stomach hurt all the
time, I mean doubled over pain kind of "hurt". I went to the gym
everyday and taught spin classes or did some type of fitness everyday
or at least 6 days a week. Emotionally
I still struggled and went through many bouts of depression and just
started to tap into the conscious mind set.
Next I stepped into a Raw high-fat based lifestyle with not as much
fitness. Although my conscious mindset of creating my life on purpose
was really forming, I was not truly enjoying the benefits as my high
nut based diet was not supporting my body. I was 15-25 pounds heavier
than ever and
I was more confused than before. Here I was being told I could eat as
many raw fatty foods like nuts, avocados, seeds and coconuts as I
wanted because they were the "good" fats, yet I still was not thriving,
and instead I was gaining weight, experiencing emotional ups-downs and
my stomach still wasn't well.
Finally after reading, listening and then really "hearing" Dr.
Douglas Graham (foodnsport.com)
and next Freelee (30bananasaday.com) I
started following a fresh, whole, ripe, raw, low fat, vegan lifestyle
consistently instead of off and on. I now I enjoy running long
distances, of which I could never do in the past 4 days a week. I eat
loads of fresh food, more than I ever have, and I am fitter, trimmer
and healthier at 40 than those previous 40 years. My stomach or rather
my digestion is so good and feels amazing. My emotions are more
balanced and my intuition is on full connection at all times.
Today my average life includes:
In addition, the intestines of carnivore type animal are short and straight and our human intestines is long (anywhere from 6 to 8.5 meters in length depending on size and age of the person it occupies) and tangled in a compacted bunch. Then of course there's the issue of our teeth and body ability as a human vs. that of a truly carnivore animal. The list of the nutritional aspects alone goes on and on. When I hear people say "I need my meat." what they are really saying is I am use to eating meat and I like it.
I want to make sure something is very clear here, I am not
judging anyone for eating meat, I am simply offering a healthier,
fresher way to enjoy eating and living. I personally enjoy freedom of
choice and within that I love that we all get to make choices
regardless of where we live or what we do. There is so much information
and inspiration on how healthy and important eating a plant based diet
can be and below is my own personal favorite choices for support:
Just imagine if the average obese person started eating 3000-4000 calories of fresh, whole, ripe plant foods everyday (low fat of course) their bodies would no longer crave the unhealthy choices naturally and with ease. They simply would not want the big burger, fries and shake, they would be too full and too satiated to want or need more food and/or comfort. Over eating is more about comfort than it is about the nature of food itself.
For some reason switching over to a plant based vegan lifestyle
increases your conscious awareness as well. I am not saying that this
diet or rather lifestyle choice is a cure all or better than anything
in the world but I am saying that from what I and many I have followed,
read, met and counseled have experienced is this fresh vegan lifestyle
is a road worth exploring, testing and looking into, seriously.
Your health effects every aspect of your life and when you feel good
life can be so much brighter and lots of new possibilities can flood
your way.
