Organic Hydroponic Gardening

Our organic hydroponic gardening system is already growing enough kale to munch on!

Fresh Organic Kale 2 weeks growth

After only 3 weeks from set up to planting the seeds to sprouts and placing them in the Tower Garden our little organic hydroponic system is beginning to produce enough kale to have a bit of a taste at 4 inches tall and with barely any attention from me. I grew up with a garden both my parents and my grandparents on both sides enjoyed growing their own fresh foods. Most people back in the day had their own food and gardens where always organic.

Most people put special emphasis on "organic" and don't get me wrong, I am not saying it is not the best for you because it is, what I am saying is I find it interesting in the sense that organic is simply the way a plant naturally grows in nature. However, when something is conventional that could refers to so many other altercations farmers are allowed to do to their plants, animals or trees. For example conventional foods can be sprayed using synthetic chemicals (fertilizers, pesticides, antibiotics, hormones) or genetically modified organisms and many times it is more of a combination of all or a few of these.

Organic certification is a process that insures that your food is grown the way nature intended and the process is quite extensive depending on the state and/or country and generally includes

  • No human sewage sludge fertilizer used in cultivation of plants or feed of animals
  • Avoiding synthetic chemicals substances not on the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances (e.g. fertilizer, pesticides, antibiotics, food additives, etc.), genetically modified organisms, irradiation, and the use of biosolids;
  • Land that has been free from prohibited synthetic chemicals for a number of years (often, three or more);
  • Keeping detailed written production and sales records (good old fashion paper trail)
  • Keeping physical separation of organic products from non-certified products;
  • Undergoing periodic on-site inspections by organic certifiers
This process is all important when maintaining an organic certified farm. This whole process insures not only that you are getting the best available foods grown without chemicals but it also insures that the soil is healthy and with healthy soil comes the most nutrient dense food as well.

Now I personally would love to have a enough space to grown my own fresh foods but currently I do not. I am hoping that the Tower Garden is the next best thing. Organic hydroponic gardening may also be an alternative for many restaurants and even small grocery stores to provide customers with an option of fresh foods grown right there. There is already one restaurant in New York City that is starting the trend, check his video out...

Here are some more pictures of the plants I have grown in only 2 weeks time:
