Green For Life
We have all heard the saying, "Get more fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet!" Yes, of course we all agree but how? I think telling people to eat more fresh and you can be more healthy is like giving a child a math problem and then giving them the answer but never showing them how to solve it on their own.
Before eating a raw diet I use eat a vegan diet with less than 25% fresh foods. I had no idea of the true importance, benefits or how to apply fresh food beyond a salad (which I never liked) or just eating fresh fruit. The smoothies I use to eat were made with yogurt and frozen fruit but not fresh.
A few years after I started eating a 100% raw diet Victoria Boutenko came to my home and starting telling me about Vibrant Health with Delicious Green Smoothies. She was the true inspiring raw person in my life so I took her Green For Life book and starting eating Green Smoothies.
I think eating green smoothies lasted for about a week and then I somehow decided I did not need them. That was back in 2005. Last September at the Raw Spirit Festival in Sedona, AZ I went back up to my friend and told her about our teeth issues and my gray hair I was getting at 36 years young. I bet you will never guess what she told me? Your right, "eat green smoothies!"
I came home and starting sneaking greens into my children's diet and started eating green smoothies every morning. In March 2009 I did a 30-Day Green Smoothie Challenge, lost 10 pounds and felt GREAT! I asked myself why not do it again? So for the month of July I am doing it again.
This time I am rereading Victoria's Green For Life and learning more and more about nutrition, our true natural health and how important greens really are.
I knew leafy greens were the #1 source of minerals for our body and the #2 source of vitamins. What I did not realize is why minerals are so important for our body to regenerate. Igor Boutenko no longer has gray hair. Victoria's wrinkles went away. I even read about a woman who adopted a baby and fed him green smoothies. His health test was off the chart.
How Do You Make Green Smoothies?
Now that you know how important green smoothies are lets make some. Its best to start with a high power blender like a Vita Mix but if you don't have one its OK!
Start by adding some sort of liquid:
- Water
- Fresh Juice
- Fresh Nut Milk
Second at 2 or more preferably organic fruits:
- Bananas
- Oranges
- Apples
- Mangoes
- Blueberries
- Strawberries
- Grapes
or non sweet fruits:
- Tomatoes
- Red Pepper
- Green Apple
- Avocado
Last by not least the GREENS:
- Spinach
- Celery
- Romaine
- Dandelion Greens
- Lambsquarter or other wild greens
- Parsley
- Kale
Blend it all up and ENJOY! I like to add a bit of ice to make it a little cool.
Green For Life Recipes
If you need a bit more guidance here are a few green smoothie recipes to get you started. Feel free to replace them with any other greens or fruits you may already have around the house.
Valya's Favorite
Blend well:-
5 cups of watermelon
- 8 leaves of romaine lettuce
- 1 cup water
Yields: 1 quart of smoothie
Summer Delight
Blend well:
- 6 peaches (without seeds)
- 2 handful of spinach leaves
- 2 cups of water
Yields: 1 quart of smoothie
Freshness
Blend well:
- 6 to 8 leaves of Romaine lettuce
- 1/2 medium honeydew
- 2 cups of water
Yields: 1 quart of smoothie
Victoria's Favorite
Blend well:-
6 leaves of red leaf lettuce
- 1/4 bunch
- 1/2 lime(juiced)
- 1/2 red onion
- 2 celery stalks
- 1/4 avocado
- 2 cups water
Yields: 1 quart of smoothie
If the flavor of the greens is too strong feel free to add less greens until your use to the flavor. Within about 3 days on green smoothies you may start to crave more greens. Over time fresh organic leafy greens may be one of your new favorite foods.
